Introduction

This blog is intended to provided a summary of 9th British Infantry Brigade activities during World War 2. More detailed summaries can be found within the respective War Diaries of the relevant units.

The 9th British Infantry Brigade, together with 7th Infantry Brigade and 8th Infantry Brigade, formed the British 3rd Infantry Division, which at the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, was commanded by Major-General Bernard Montgomery.

The 9th British Infantry Brigade, together with the rest of the 3rd Infantry Division, was sent to France in October 1939 shortly after the outbreak of war as part of the British Expeditionary Force.

Following the evacuation from Dunkirk, the 9th British Infantry Brigade spent four years training in the UK in preparation for D-Day. The 3rd Infantry Division was the first British division to land at Sword Beach on D-Day.

The 9th British Infantry Brigade fought through the Battle of Normandy, the Netherlands and later the invasion of Germany until the end of the war.
